ABS vs PC vs PC/ABS
These three materials cover many enclosure projects. The right choice depends on impact, heat, appearance and the assembly.
Comparison
| Material | Strengths | Watch-outs | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| ABS | Good impact, easy processing, good surface finish | Moderate heat resistance; not for harsh environments | Consumer enclosures, covers, cosmetic parts |
| PC | High impact, good heat resistance, can be clear | Needs drying; gate and stress control matter | Tough housings, clear covers, industrial parts |
| PC/ABS | Balance of impact, heat and appearance | Grade selection matters; not all blends are equal | Electronic housings, appliance parts |
How to choose
- Define the working temperature and impact risk.
- Decide whether the part is cosmetic or hidden.
- Check the assembly method: snap fits, screws, bonding, overmolding.
- Confirm compliance and flame requirements for the market.
- Ask for a grade recommendation and test the actual part.
Do not choose by price alone
A cheaper resin can fail in assembly or in the field. The cost of a material change after tooling is usually higher than the difference between grades.
